When we founded Tsevett Agro Services in 2023, we were just a group of university students with a shared vision: to bridge the agricultural knowledge gap in our communities. Today, less than two years later, we find ourselves recognized on the global stage at the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) COP 16 Summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The Turning Point
Our breakthrough came with the Youth for Climate Award for our GIS Mapping project in Arua. What started as a classroom assignment evolved into “Building Climate Resilience in Arua Using GIS” – a project that would change everything for our young organization and the 400+ farming families we now serve.
The Italian Ministry of Energy and Environment, through the UNDP Rome Center’s Youth for Climate initiative, saw potential in our approach. They didn’t just give us funding; they gave us credibility and a platform to prove that young Africans can lead climate solutions.
Beyond the Awards
Recognition is meaningful, but impact matters more. At the bioenergy conference at Kampala’s Serena Hotel, we weren’t just attendees – we were contributors, sharing our innovations alongside established researchers. The training sessions with Uganda’s Ministry of Information and Technology and Muni University on patent rights opened our eyes to protecting our innovations.
Our latest win – the MUNIRIF project under Muni University’s Research and Innovation Fund – validates our approach to harnessing Indigenous Microorganisms as natural pesticides. This isn’t just about reducing chemical use; it’s about proving that traditional knowledge, when combined with scientific rigor, can solve modern problems.
The Real Victory
The certificates on our wall are impressive, but our real achievement is in the field. When a farmer in Ayivu sub-county tells us that our tree seedlings survived the dry season, when our GIS maps help a community choose the right crops for their soil type, when our workshops empower young people to see agriculture as innovation rather than tradition – that’s when we know we’re succeeding.
What’s Next
From our headquarters in Arua City, we’re scaling across West Nile and beyond. Our partnership with Muni University provides the intellectual foundation, while our collaboration with district and sub-county governments ensures community buy-in. The international recognition validates our approach, but our commitment remains local: empowering farming communities to thrive despite climate challenges.
We’re not just building climate resilience; we’re building a movement. Every map we create, every seedling we distribute, every farmer we train is part of a larger vision – a food-secure Africa where communities thrive in harmony with nature.
